The 2013–2018 XA40, nearly always for CarPlay through a box on the Touch 2 screen or an Android screen. XA50 owners come for a wireless adapter, a bigger Android screen or, on Japanese imports, a screen to replace the Japanese unit. Older XA30 cars come in for an Android screen with DAB and a camera on the side-hinged tailgate.

Not at the head unit: the Hybrid uses the same Touch 2 or Smart Connect unit and the same fascia and harness as the petrol car, so the CarPlay box and the Android screen fit the same way. The only difference is wiring for accessories such as a dash cam, which we take from the 12 V side at the driver's side fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off.

XA30 — 2006–2012: Factory CD radio without a screen; an optional navigation unit on a few cars, the 2010 facelift kept the same layout. XA40 — 2013–2018: Toyota Touch 2 or Touch 2 with Go 6.1-inch, 7-inch from the 2016 facelift; no CarPlay. XA50 — 2019 on: Toyota Touch 2 with Go 8-inch; CarPlay and Android Auto from 2020, 2019 cars via the software update; Toyota Smart Connect 10.5-inch with wireless CarPlay from 2023. Not sure? CarPlay: Android screen on the XA30, box or screen on the XA40, factory CarPlay on most XA50 cars. Car radio: Android screen with DAB and a camera input on the XA30 and XA40; bigger screen option on the XA50. Reversing camera: Tailgate camera on the Android screen, the Touch 2 input or the factory unit. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with parking mode and a low-voltage cut-off, cables hidden. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most RAV4 owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
