It depends on what your car already has. With wired CarPlay, a wireless dongle costs €19.04 to €24.16 online. If the factory screen supports CarPlay, activation by coding costs €34 to €58 for most BMW codes on eBay, or €119.99 to €259.99 from coders in Ireland such as Bimmerwise and BMW Coding Ireland (checked 9 October 2026). Otherwise a CarPlay box goes behind the factory screen, or an Android screen replaces the radio. At Radio King activation starts from €150, boxes from €300 and Android screens fitted from €390, exact price from your registration. The risk with the cheapest codes: a dealer software update can remove CarPlay.

The cheapest ways to get CarPlay, by car
1. Your car already has wired CarPlay: a wireless dongle
If CarPlay works when you plug the phone in, the cheapest upgrade is a wireless adapter in the USB port: €19.04 on AliExpress or €24.16 on Amazon.co.uk (seen on 9 October 2026). No fitter needed. It does nothing for a car without CarPlay.
2. The factory screen supports CarPlay: activation by coding
Some factory screens have CarPlay in the software, switched off. Coding switches it on and nothing is fitted.
- Online codes and SD cards. eBay.ie lists BMW activations from €19.99 to €212.12, most for NBT Evo at €34 to €58, and VW MIB2 SD-card unlocks at €34.95 to €54.41. Vision Coding in the UK sells a VW MIB2 SD card for £39.89 that “cannot be reused or returned”.
- Coders in Ireland. Bimmerwise lists BMW and MINI activation at “€119.99 through €259.99”, permanent and tied to the VIN, remote or at the workshop, with the wireless antenna extra. BMW Coding Ireland says “Activation is €150 on NBT Evo and €220 on MGU” and “You only pay once CarPlay is running”, plus €20 for a Dublin call-out and €50 for an ID6 update.
- Mobile and remote coders. Your Car Coder lists BMW ID6 at €200, Audi A6/A7 at €185, Audi A4/A5/Q5/Q7 at €235, VW App-Connect at €250 and Mercedes at €400 to €450. VAGSoft codes MIB2 and MIB3 units remotely “from € 150”.
- Radio King. Activation starts from €150 and BMW ID5/ID6 is €250, with the original screen kept.
3. A factory screen without CarPlay: a box behind it
Mercedes COMAND and Audio 20, BMW CIC and NBT, Audi MMI 3G, Volvo and Porsche screens can take a CarPlay interface box behind the screen, so the factory display stays. ICE Systems lists boxes for BMW at €995, Mercedes NTG4.5, 4.7 and 5 at €995, Audi from €895 and Porsche at €1,295 (whether fitting is included is not stated), and a genuine BMW wireless CarPlay retrofit at €495. Radio Masters charges €190 to fit a customer-supplied box on a standard install and €310 on an advanced one. At Radio King boxes are €300 to €400 in the shop with fitting added (Mercedes from €350 plus fitting), and a full OEM-style wireless CarPlay and Android Auto retrofit starts from €450.
4. No screen at all: an Android radio
With a basic radio, an Android unit with CarPlay replaces it: from €64.61 online plus €100 to €310 fitting, or €270 to €320 supplied and fitted at published prices, and from €390 fitted at Radio King. The full comparison is in cheap Android car radio fitting.
Halfords Ireland lists no CarPlay activation or interface service. It fits CarPlay and Android Auto stereos bought from Halfords, from €120.
What the cheap price usually leaves out
- A software update can undo it. On a BMW owners’ forum, CarPlay enabled without an FSC activation code “can be lost if the HU is updated by a BMW dealership”. A Mercedes A45 owner lost CarPlay after a dealer update in March 2023, and according to the thread only a new head unit would restore it. VAGSoft says its activation survives updates “in most cases”. Ask any coder what happens after a dealer update before you pay.
- Codes you cannot send back. An SD card that “cannot be reused or returned” is money gone if it does not work on your car. Buy a code from a seller outside the EU and the CCPC warns you have fewer protections and no small claims process.
- Extras after the headline price. The wireless antenna on a BMW activation, €50 for an ID6 update, €20 for a call-out. A box bought online still needs €190 to €310 of fitting at published rates.
- Import charges on cheap parts. Revenue charges VAT on every import from outside the EU, plus €3 duty per item on parcels worth €150 or less, and from 1 November 2026 a €2 handling fee. On a €19.04 dongle that is a large share of the price. From the UK, only UK-made goods escape the duty.
- Who stands behind a box. Under section 19 of the Consumer Rights Act 2022, when the business that sells you the box also fits it, a bad installation counts as a fault with the goods. Buy them separately and each answers only for their half.
Buy cheap, buy twice: the real cost
The cheapest job is the one you pay for once. Paying for the same activation twice, and ending up with a professional anyway, is how a cheap code turns into the expensive option.
| Example: BMW with NBT Evo | Route A: cheapest code | Route B: done once |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | eBay code, most €34 to €58 | Coder in Ireland, €119.99 to €259.99 as published |
| After a dealer software update | CarPlay can be lost | Agreed in advance: a permanent activation tied to the VIN |
| Second activation | €119.99 to €259.99 | Not needed |
| Total | about €154 to €318 | €119.99 to €259.99 |
This is an example, not a forecast: many cheap codes keep working, and the saving is real only if yours does.
When the cheap option is perfectly fine
- Your car already has wired CarPlay and you only want it wireless: the dongle is the whole job.
- Your car no longer goes to a dealer for software updates, which is when coded CarPlay has been reported lost.
- You are comfortable with a laptop or an SD card and you have read the seller’s refund terms.
- The car is leaving you soon and you want CarPlay for the time you have it.
