Exploring the Evolution and Potential of CarPlay Systems

Next-generation Apple CarPlay, announced at WWDC 2022, goes beyond mirroring the iPhone: it can take over every screen in the car, including the instrument cluster and climate controls, while still running from the phone. Carmakers are split between adopting it and protecting their own systems; here is what that means for drivers and for cars already on the road.

CarPlay by Apple has completely changed in-vehicle entertainment by integrating smartphones with car infotainment systems. The arrival of next-generation CarPlay systems is ushering in a dramatic turning point in both the automotive and tech industries. The article describes the advantages, challenges, and consequences of CarPlay systems from the perspective of drivers and automakers.

What Makes Next-Gen CarPlay Unique?

The next-generation CarPlay, unveiled at WWDC 2022, is more than a connectivity feature; it represents a comprehensive operating system designed to integrate across all car displays and systems. Unlike its predecessor, which primarily mirrored smartphone functions, this version offers deeper integration into vehicle hardware, including climate controls, speedometers, and more.

However, it remains tethered to the iPhone, acting as a secondary system atop the OEM’s primary platform. This dual-layered approach raises questions about practicality and resource allocation for automakers, particularly those already investing heavily in proprietary systems.

The Drive Behind Innovation

CarPlay’s evolution appears to stem from Apple’s strategic pivot following setbacks in its autonomous vehicle project, “Project Titan.” By leveraging its advanced software, Apple seeks partnerships with OEMs to embed CarPlay systems into future vehicles. This partnership strategy could help Apple extend its ecosystem into the automotive domain while allowing OEMs to offer enhanced infotainment experiences.

The OEM Perspective: Friend or Foe?

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are divided in their response to CarPlay’s growing influence. Tesla, for instance, maintains complete control over its in-vehicle systems, avoiding reliance on third-party platforms. On the other hand, brands like Porsche are exploring Apple’s advanced technology, signaling a willingness to adopt next-gen CarPlay in future models.

For many OEMs, the challenge lies in balancing innovation with autonomy. Integrating CarPlay can enhance user satisfaction but may also undermine OEMs’ proprietary systems, potentially sidelining their talent and resources. Maintaining control over core functionalities is vital to preserving OEMs’ unique value propositions.

One notable limitation of CarPlay systems is their reliance on screen-based interfaces, which may conflict with advanced head-up display (HUD) technologies. Automakers like BMW have invested heavily in HUDs, which prioritize safety and ergonomics by projecting key information directly into the driver’s field of view. Integrating CarPlay into these systems requires a nuanced approach, ensuring a seamless and safe user experience.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and CarPlay

The combination of CarPlay with ADAS and autonomous driving features is another moot point. Vendors have spent years developing intricate control systems for these features, and delegating the critical functionalities of these systems to another external system such as CarPlay might bring jeopardy to safety and innovation. To maintain trust and safety, it is mandatory to put a clear division between the third-party technologies and its ADAS proprietary systems.

The Path Forward for CarPlay and OEMs

While CarPlay systems have clear advantages, such as familiarity and intuitive user interaction, these benefits are outweighed by the negative consequences of the use of technology to impede adoption. Specific to this case is the consideration that should be given to weighing the advantages of third-party integration against the dysfunction introduced by dependence and internal expertise erosion. A workable balance lies in combining technologies from outside with those built in-house, thus sustaining both innovation and control.

OEMs can make a hybrid offering wherein the best feature is realized through innovations such as CarPlay infotainment systems along with a focus on brand-narrative user experiences that maintain autonomy for OEMs. This way, cars could introduce advances in technology to keep up with safety and reliability expected by the drivers.

What this means if your car has no CarPlay today

Next-generation CarPlay only arrives with new cars. For the car you already own, the practical options are the same as today: a wireless CarPlay interface behind the factory screen, or an Android head unit with CarPlay and Android Auto built in. Both are fitted at our Dublin workshop; the routes are compared in how to add Apple CarPlay to any car, and recent examples are in our latest installs.

Conclusion

These CarPlay stitching innovations paint the picture of connected, user-friendly driving in contemporary car infotainment systems. Throughout this change, collaboration among players will ensure their concept remains valid. OEMs can keep themselves leading the pack in celebration of the changing paradigms, allowing this new concept to aid them in providing superior driving experiences.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is next-generation CarPlay?

A version of CarPlay announced at WWDC 2022 that can run on every display in the car, including the instrument cluster and climate controls, rather than only mirroring iPhone apps on the centre screen. It still needs an iPhone connected to work.

Does next-generation CarPlay work without an iPhone?

No. It remains tethered to the iPhone and runs as a layer on top of the carmaker’s own system, which is one reason some manufacturers are cautious about adopting it.

Which carmakers support next-generation CarPlay?

Adoption is uneven. Porsche has signalled interest in the next-generation system, while Tesla keeps full control of its own software and does not offer CarPlay at all. Most brands continue with standard CarPlay for now.

Can I get CarPlay in an older car?

Yes. A wireless CarPlay interface fits behind a factory screen, and an Android head unit with CarPlay built in replaces a basic radio. Both are fitted in one visit at our Dublin 11 workshop and keep the steering wheel controls.
