Mercedes-Benz B-Class upgrades, generation by generation.

The W246 from 2011 to 2018, usually for a 10.25-inch Android screen or a wireless CarPlay box, often with a reversing camera and parking sensors done in the same visit. W245 cars still come in for Android screens. W247 owners mostly want wireless CarPlay on a car that already has it wired, or the box where the Smartphone Integration pack was never ordered.

The steering-wheel buttons, Bluetooth calls, climate control and the factory speakers all keep working through the new screen, and the COMAND controller is kept on W246 cars. The wiring is plug-in with a B-Class harness, nothing is cut, and the original unit is boxed up so the car can go back to standard if it is ever sold.

W245 — 2005–2011: Audio 20 CD radio or Audio 50 APS navigation in the double-DIN slot; COMAND APS on a few cars. W246 — 2011–2018: Audio 20 on NTG4.5 with the 5.8 or 7-inch pod screen; the 2014 facelift brought the 8-inch display, and CarPlay was an option on some cars from 2016. W247 — 2019 on: MBUX (NTG6) with the 7 or 10.25-inch touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto on most cars, as the Smartphone Integration pack on early ones. Not sure? CarPlay: Android screen on the W245, a CarPlay box or Android screen on the W246, wireless CarPlay on the W247 MBUX. Reversing camera: Camera on the factory screen where it supports it, a mirror monitor or Android screen where it does not. Car radio: Car-specific Android screen with wireless CarPlay, DAB and camera input, factory controls kept. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Four rear sensors and a beeper that speeds up as you close in; nothing on the screen. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with parking mode and a low-voltage cut-off, cables hidden. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most B-Class owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
