Ford Kuga upgrades, generation by generation.

Mk2 cars from 2013 to 2019, split between the Android screen on SYNC 1 cars and CarPlay on SYNC 2 and SYNC 3 cars, plus a reversing camera on most of them. Mk1 owners come for a screen to replace the 6000CD; Mk3 owners for a dash cam, front sensors, a camera and extended ambient lighting, often on the PHEV.

Only where the power comes from. On the Mk3 PHEV, full hybrid and mild hybrid the dash cam is hardwired from the 12-volt fuse box on the passenger side with a low-voltage cut-off, and we never go near the high-voltage side. Parking mode works as normal because the 12-volt battery is still there. The cameras and cable routes are the same as on a diesel Kuga.

Mk1 — 2008–2012: 6000CD radio or the Sony CD unit; a small navigation screen on some Titanium cars, no CarPlay. Mk2 — 2013–2019: SYNC 1 with a 4.2-inch display or the Sony DAB unit with a 5-inch screen on 2013–2016 cars, SYNC 2 with an 8-inch touchscreen on Titanium X; SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen from the 2016 facelift, CarPlay after a software update. Mk3 — 2020 on (petrol, diesel, mild hybrid, full hybrid and PHEV): SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen and CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory; SYNC 4 with a 13.2-inch screen from the 2024 facelift. Reversing camera: Mirror monitor or Android screen on the Mk1, camera into the SYNC screen on Mk2 and Mk3 cars. Car radio: Android screen on the Mk1 and SYNC 1 Mk2 cars; SYNC 3 and SYNC 4 usually stay. CarPlay: Android screen on Mk1 and SYNC 1 cars, a box on SYNC 2, the update on SYNC 3, factory CarPlay on the Mk3. Dash cam: Hardwired from the passenger-side fuse box, 12-volt side only on hybrid and PHEV Mk3 cars. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors on the Mk1, front sensors coded into SYNC on Mk2 and Mk3 cars. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kit on the Mk1, factory ambient light extended on Mk2 and Mk3 cars. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Most Kuga owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
