Which route your Ford takes
Ford is unusually easy to read from the dashboard, because the radio tells you the year:
- SYNC 3, 2016 on — the 8-inch screen with flat tiles. Focus MK4, Fiesta MK8, Kuga MK3, Puma, Transit MK8 facelift, Ranger facelift. CarPlay and Android Auto are in the hardware; on early cars still running software 1.x or 2.x we update to 3.x and the CarPlay tile appears. Wired, as Ford shipped it.
- SYNC 2, 2015–2016 — the 8-inch screen split into four coloured quarters, badged MyFord Touch. No CarPlay, and no update path to it. Focus MK3 facelift, Kuga MK2, Mondeo MK5. Takes an Android screen that keeps the climate controls on screen.
- SYNC 1, 2012–2015 — a 4-inch screen with buttons either side. Focus MK3, Fiesta MK7 facelift, Transit Custom, Ranger T6, EcoSport. Android screen.
- 6000CD and Sony CD, 2004–2012 — the rectangular radio with the green or blue display. Focus MK2, Fiesta MK7, Mondeo MK4, Kuga MK1, Transit MK7. Android screen with a Ford-shaped fascia.

What changes on the dash
With a SYNC 3 update, nothing you can see except a new CarPlay tile in the menu — the screen, the buttons and the reverse camera stay exactly as they are. With an Android screen the radio comes out and the new unit goes in behind a Ford-shaped fascia, so the double-DIN opening is filled with no gap and no cut trim. The CAN adapter keeps the steering-wheel buttons and the information display between the dials; the climate panel stays physical, and on SYNC 2 cars we fit the unit that keeps the climate readout on screen.
Prices
- Android screen with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto — units from €290 supply-only, fitting booked at checkout, two to three hours.
- SYNC 3 software update — quoted from the reg once we confirm the current version.
- Reverse camera at the same visit — the usual add-on on Transit and Transit Custom; it shares the fitting time.
