BMW 1 Series upgrades, generation by generation.

F20 and F21 cars from 2011 to 2019, mostly for CarPlay and reversing cameras. E87 cars come in for Android screens, because the Business radio has no display to work with. F40 owners mostly want dash cams, front sensors and extended ambient lighting.

Most 1 Series jobs take two to four hours: activation is under an hour, a CarPlay box or an Android screen is half a day, cameras and sensors two to three hours. You can wait at the workshop in Rosemount Business Park or drop the car in the morning.

E81 / E87 — 2004–2013 (E87 five-door, E81 three-door, E82 coupé and E88 convertible): Business CD radio without a screen, or Professional navigation with CCC iDrive to 2008 and CIC iDrive from 2009. F20 / F21 — 2011–2019 (F20 five-door and F21 three-door): Business radio with a 6.5-inch screen, CIC iDrive on early cars, NBT from 2013 and NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017. F40 — 2019–2024 (Five-door hatch): iDrive 7 (ID7) with an 8.8 or 10.25-inch touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory. Not sure? Reversing camera: Camera in the boot handle on the iDrive screen, the Android screen or a mirror monitor. CarPlay: Activation on NBT Evo, a CarPlay box on CIC and NBT cars, an Android screen on the E87. Car radio: A 10.25-inch Android screen with the iDrive knob kept on the E87 and F20. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits for the E87 and F20, extended ambient lighting on the F40. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and under-seat woofers for the Stereo and Hi-Fi systems. Parking sensors: Factory-style PDC coded into iDrive, or colour-matched aftermarket sensors. Dash cam: Hardwired from the glovebox fuse panel with a cut-off set for the BMW battery. Subwoofer: Under-seat woofers and a DSP amplifier, no boot space lost. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

Reversing camera: two to three hours. CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most 1 Series owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

E81 / E87: the Business CD radio without a screen, or Professional navigation with CCC iDrive to 2008 and CIC iDrive from 2009 stays and we add to it. F20 / F21: the Business radio with a 6.5-inch screen, CIC iDrive on early cars, NBT from 2013 and NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017 stays and we add to it. F40: the iDrive 7 (ID7) with an 8.8 or 10.25-inch touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory stays and we add to it. Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
