BMW i3 upgrades, generation by generation.

Only in two places. A dash cam is wired to the 12 V battery with a cut-off set for it, not to the high-voltage system, and we never touch the orange cables. Everything else — the CarPlay box, camera coding, speakers — is the same job as on any BMW with NBT or ID6.

CarPlay: A CarPlay box on 2013–2017 NBT cars, coding activation on 2018–2022 ID6 cars. Reversing camera: Factory camera coded into NBT or ID6 with guidelines, camera in the tailgate handle. Dash cam: Hardwired with a cut-off set for the i3's 12 V battery, parking mode included. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters; Harman Kardon cars keep the amplifier. Car radio: Larger Android screen with the factory buttons and amplifier kept, where the original display is too small. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Speakers: two to four hours depending on how many speakers are changed. Most i3 owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
