BMW X1 upgrades, generation by generation.

The F48 from 2015 to 2022, nearly always for CarPlay: a box on the early NBT cars and coding activation from 2017. E84 cars come in for Android screens and reversing cameras, U11 owners for dash cams and extended ambient light.

E84 — 2009–2015: Business radio with a 6.5-inch screen, or Professional navigation with CIC iDrive. F48 — 2015–2022: 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen: NBT on 2015–2016 cars, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017, iDrive 7 on the 2020 facelift. CarPlay: A CarPlay box on the E84, coding activation on the F48 with NBT Evo, factory CarPlay on the U11. Car radio: A 10.25-inch Android screen with the iDrive knob kept on the E84 and F48. Reversing camera: Factory camera coded into iDrive on the F48 and U11, box or screen input on the E84. Dash cam: Hardwired from the glovebox fuse panel with parking mode and a BMW-safe cut-off. Parking sensors: PDC coded into iDrive on the F48, colour-matched sensors on the E84. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits on the E84 and F48, extended ambient lighting on the U11. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and under-seat woofers for the Stereo and Hi-Fi systems. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Most X1 owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

E84: the Business radio with a 6.5-inch screen, or Professional navigation with CIC iDrive stays and we add to it. F48: the 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen: NBT on 2015–2016 cars, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017, iDrive 7 on the 2020 facelift stays and we add to it. U11: the iDrive 8 curved display; CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory stays and we add to it. Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
