No. The box sits behind the dash on the 12 V side, draws nothing when the car is off, and leaves the iDrive menus, the range and charging screens exactly as they were. You switch between iDrive and CarPlay from the factory controller.
How much does CarPlay cost on a BMW i3?
It depends on the generation. I01 (2013–2017): from €350; I01 LCI (2018–2022): from €250. Fitting is done at our Dublin 11 workshop — send the reg and we confirm the exact price before you book.

I01 LCI: nothing physical changes — the NBT Evo (ID6) iDrive on a 10.25-inch touchscreen; CarPlay from the factory as an option stays and the CarPlay tile simply appears.
