The 2017–2021 Sensus Connect car, nearly always for wireless CarPlay because the option was skipped when new, and for dash cams. The P3 (2008–2017) comes for CarPlay boxes on the 7-inch screen and for reversing cameras. Google built-in cars from 2022 mostly want a dash cam, front sensors or a wireless CarPlay adapter.

Look at the portrait screen when you start the car. Sensus Connect shows four tiles (navigation, media, phone, car) and a Volvo logo; Google built-in shows Google Maps with a Google Assistant microphone and a Play Store app. Cars built before mid-2021 are Sensus, later ones are Google. The registration year alone can mislead, so send the reg or a photo of the screen.

Yes. Nothing we fit on the XC60 touches the audio amplifier: the CarPlay box, the wireless adapter and the camera all feed the original system through its own inputs, and the Android screen on P3 cars keeps the original amplifier through an adapter. Bowers & Wilkins, Harman Kardon or standard sound is unchanged, and a dash cam, sensors and ambient lighting are electrically separate.

P3 — 2008–2017: A small display with the RTI pop-up navigation on early cars, Sensus with a 5 or 7-inch screen from 2011 and Sensus Connect from 2015; no CarPlay on any of them. Sensus SPA — 2017–2021: Sensus Connect with the 9-inch portrait touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto were a factory option, wired only, and many cars were ordered without it. CarPlay: A wireless CarPlay box on Sensus cars, a wireless adapter on Google built-in cars that have factory CarPlay. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse panel under the glovebox, cut-off set for the battery; 12 V side on T8 hybrids. Reversing camera: Camera in the tailgate handle: through the box or an interface on the P3, OEM camera coded in on SPA cars. Car radio: 9-inch Android screen in the Sensus position on the P3; Sensus Connect and Google cars keep their own screen. Parking sensors: Front park assist added to cars with rear sensors only, coded into the screen on SPA cars. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors, footwells and console on every generation, colour from your phone. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Most XC60 owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
