Volvo XC40 upgrades, generation by generation.

2018–2021 Sensus Connect cars, mostly for wireless CarPlay because the option was skipped when new, then dash cams and reversing cameras. Google built-in cars come for dash cams, front sensors and wireless CarPlay adapters. The electric Recharge and EX40 are the same job as any Google built-in XC40, with a bit more care around the 12 V battery.

Start the car and look at the portrait screen: Sensus Connect shows four tiles and a Volvo logo, Google built-in shows Google Maps with a microphone and a Play Store icon. Petrol and diesel cars built up to mid-2021 are Sensus, later ones are Google, and the electric Recharge has been Google from the start. Send the reg or a photo of the screen if in doubt.

Yes. The CarPlay box, wireless adapter, camera and sensors all use the car's own inputs, so the Harman Kardon or standard audio is untouched and nothing is cut. Everything we fit on the XC40 is reversible, which matters on a car that may go back at the end of a PCP or a lease.

Sensus CMA — 2017–2021 (Petrol, diesel, mild hybrid and Recharge plug-in hybrid): Sensus Connect with the 9-inch portrait touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto were a factory option on many cars, wired only. Google CMA — 2020 on (Petrol, mild hybrid, Recharge plug-in hybrid and the electric Recharge, now EX40): Android Automotive (Google built-in): on the electric Recharge from 2020, on every XC40 from the 2022 model year; wired Apple CarPlay added by software update in 2022, no Android Auto. CarPlay: Wireless box on Sensus cars without CarPlay, wireless adapter on cars with it and on Google built-in cars. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse panel under the glovebox; 12 V side only on the Recharge hybrid and electric. Reversing camera: Factory-look camera in the tailgate handle coded into Sensus or Google where the car came without one. Parking sensors: Front park assist added to cars with rear sensors only, coded into the centre screen. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kit in doors, footwells and console on both generations, colour from your phone. Car radio: Car-specific Android screen with wireless CarPlay, DAB and camera input, factory controls kept. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Parking sensors: two to three hours for one end, about half a day for front and rear. Most XC40 owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
