Sensus or the keypad console
Volvo’s cabins split cleanly into two eras, and you can tell them apart from the driver’s seat:
- Sensus Connect, 2015 on — the tall portrait touchscreen in the centre of the dash. XC90 II, XC60 II, V60 II, S60 III, XC40, V90. CarPlay was a paid option, so plenty of cars have the hardware and not the feature. Where it is genuinely absent, a CarPlay box behind the dash puts CarPlay and Android Auto on the factory screen without touching a single Volvo menu.
- The keypad centre console, 2004–2014 — the slim stack of buttons with a small display above it. V70, S60 II, S80, V50, C30, XC60 I, XC90 I. No CarPlay in any form and no update path, so a car-specific Android screen goes in with a Volvo fascia.
- 2022 on — Google built-in. CarPlay arrived by over-the-air update; nothing to fit.

What changes on the dash
With a CarPlay box, nothing: the portrait Sensus screen, the Volvo menus, the climate page and the reverse camera all stay, the box hides behind the glovebox and one USB lead runs to the console. With an Android screen the keypad console is replaced by a screen in a Volvo-shaped fascia — the one visible change — while the steering-wheel buttons keep working through a CAN adapter and the heating controls stay physical. Harman Kardon and Bowers & Wilkins amplifiers are kept on both routes.
