Volvo XC90 CarPlay installation, generation by generation.

Our wireless CarPlay box, which is the job we do most on the XC90. On 2015–2021 Sensus Connect cars CarPlay was a paid option and it cannot be coded in afterwards, so the box goes behind the portrait screen, shows CarPlay or Android Auto full-size and is driven by touch. Sensus stays as it was, and you switch between the two with a button press.

Yes, with an Android screen in place of the HU radio. The old car has no screen to feed, so a 9-inch unit made for the P2 dash takes its place with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB, a reverse camera input and the steering-wheel buttons kept. The Premium Sound amplifier is usually retained through an adapter, so the seven-seat cabin still sounds as it did.

It depends on the generation. P2 (2002–2014): from €650; Sensus SPA (2015–2021): from €300; Google SPA (2021 on): from €150. Fitting is done at our Dublin 11 workshop — send the reg and we confirm the exact price before you book.

P2, built 2002–2014 (Volvo HU-series radio with no screen; RTI navigation with a pop-up screen in the dash top on some cars): Android screen replacing the HU radio, with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB and a camera input; the pop-up navigation stays or comes out, your choice. Sensus SPA, built 2015–2021 (Sensus Connect with the 9-inch portrait touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto a factory option, wired only, that many cars were ordered without): Our wireless CarPlay box on the portrait screen where the option was never ordered, driven by touch; cars with wired CarPlay get a plug-in wireless kit instead. Google SPA, built 2021 on (Android Automotive (Google built-in) from the 2022 model year; wired Apple CarPlay added by software update in 2022, no Android Auto; a larger screen on the latest facelift): Factory CarPlay once the 2022 update is on the car; a wireless adapter makes it cable-free. Android phones use the built-in Google apps rather than Android Auto.

P2: two to three hours; Sensus SPA: two to four hours; Google SPA: about an hour. You can wait at the workshop or drop the XC90 in the morning and collect it the same day.

Sensus SPA: the Sensus Connect with the 9-inch portrait touchscreen; CarPlay and Android Auto a factory option, wired only, that many cars were ordered without and its controls stay; the box sits behind the trim and is switched from the factory buttons. Google SPA: CarPlay is factory-fitted, so we only add to it.
