No. Sensus on the 2012–2019 V40 never had CarPlay in its software, whatever the model year, so there is nothing to switch on. Cars with the 7-inch screen get our wireless CarPlay box, which shows CarPlay and Android Auto on the original screen and is driven from the Sensus buttons. Cars with the small 5-inch screen get an 8.8-inch Android screen instead, because there is not enough display to work with.
Does the wireless box change how the Volvo screen works day to day?
The Sensus menus, radio, phone and climate readouts stay exactly as they were. You switch into CarPlay with a long press on a button we agree with you, and switch back the same way. Your phone connects over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi within a few seconds of starting the car, so there is no cable in the cupholder and nothing to remember.
How much does CarPlay cost on a Volvo V40?
It depends on the generation. Mk1 (1995–2004): from €650; P1 (2012–2019): from €450. Fitting is done at our Dublin 11 workshop — send the reg and we confirm the exact price before you book.

Mk1: two to three hours; P1: two to four hours. You can wait at the workshop or drop the V40 in the morning and collect it the same day.
What stays factory when you fit CarPlay on a Volvo V40?
Mk1: the display is replaced, but the steering-wheel buttons, the factory amplifier and the climate controls are kept. P1: the Sensus with a 5-inch screen on base cars or a 7-inch screen with Sensus Navigation; Sensus Connect from 2015 on most cars; no CarPlay on any of them and its controls stay; the box sits behind the trim and is switched from the factory buttons.
