Lexus ES upgrades, generation by generation.

The 2018–2019 ES 300h that turned out not to have CarPlay, for the plug-in box behind the Remote Touch screen, and 2020 and later cars for a wireless adapter. The ES only arrived in Ireland with this XZ10 generation, so there are no older right-hand-drive cars to speak of, apart from the odd import.

Yes. The box goes behind the factory display and plugs into the existing connectors, so the Mark Levinson amplifier, the reversing camera, the parking display, the Remote Touch pad and the steering-wheel buttons carry on exactly as before. CarPlay and Android Auto appear as an extra source, and if the box is ever removed the ES returns to standard with no trace.

CarPlay: CarPlay box on 2018–2019 cars, wireless adapter on 2020–2021 cars, factory CarPlay on the facelift. Reversing camera: Factory-look camera on the factory screen with guidelines, coded in where the car supports it. Car radio: Larger Android screen with the factory buttons and amplifier kept, where the original display is too small. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with parking mode and a low-voltage cut-off, cables hidden. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most ES owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
