Radio King upgrades the Porsche Boxster: 987 cars get a double-DIN Android screen in place of the CDR radio, or our CarPlay interface on PCM cars; the 981 gets a screen or the interface on PCM 3.1; the 718 keeps PCM 4.0 and gets a wireless CarPlay and Android Auto module. 987 cars from 2005 to 2012, mostly for a double-DIN Android screen in place of the CDR radio, and PCM cars for the CarPlay interface. 981 owners split the same way. 718 owners come to make the factory CarPlay wireless and add Android Auto. Cayman cars of the same years are the identical job.
Does the roof make any difference to the install?
No. The radio, PCM and fascia are the same in the Boxster and the Cayman of the same generation. A reversing camera on the Boxster mounts above the number plate with the cable run inside the rear bodywork, which takes a little longer than on a hatchback but is still done the same day.

987 — 2005–2012: CDR-24 radio or PCM 2.1 to 2008; CDR-30 or PCM 3.0 with a touchscreen on 987.2 cars from 2009. 981 — 2012–2016: PCM 3.1 with a 7-inch touchscreen on most cars, CDR-31 radio on some; no CarPlay on any year. 982 — 2016 on: PCM 4.0 with a 7-inch touchscreen and wired CarPlay; wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on most cars from the 2022 model year. What does Radio King fit on a Porsche Boxster?
Car radio: Android screen in place of the CDR radio on 987 and 981 cars, PCM kept with a CarPlay module on the 718. Reversing camera: Factory-look camera on the factory screen with guidelines, coded in where the car supports it. CarPlay: Activation or a CarPlay box on the factory screen; a wireless adapter where CarPlay is already fitted. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with parking mode and a low-voltage cut-off, cables hidden. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.
How long do jobs on a Porsche Boxster take?
Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Reversing camera: two to three hours. CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most Boxster owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
Do you keep the factory system on a Porsche Boxster?
987: the CDR-24 radio or PCM 2.1 to 2008; CDR-30 or PCM 3.0 with a touchscreen on 987.2 cars from 2009 stays and we add to it. 981: the PCM 3.1 with a 7-inch touchscreen on most cars, CDR-31 radio on some; no CarPlay on any year stays and we add to it. 982: the PCM 4.0 with a 7-inch touchscreen and wired CarPlay; wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on most cars from the 2022 model year stays and we add to it. Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
