Land Rover · Defender

Land Rover Defender upgrades, generation by generation.

Radio King upgrades the Land Rover Defender by generation: classic Tdi and Td5 trucks and Puma cars get a DAB radio or an Android screen, better speakers, a dash cam and a rear-door camera; the 2020-on L663 keeps Pivi Pro and gets a wireless adapter, dash cam and towing camera. Send your reg and we confirm what fits.

FAQ

Land Rover Defender: questions people ask.

Ask on WhatsApp
Which Defender do you see most?

Puma trucks (2007–2016) for Android screens and speakers, then Td5s for DAB radios and reversing cameras, since the spare wheel blocks the view. New L663 Defenders come for dash cams, wireless CarPlay and a second camera for towing. 90, 110 and 130 bodies are the same job apart from cable length.

Can a reversing camera work with the spare wheel on the back door?

Yes. The camera goes above the number plate, in the door handle or on the wheel carrier itself, wherever the wheel leaves a clear view, and the cable follows the roof channel to a mirror monitor or the Android screen. On 110s and 130s used for towing we can add a second camera looking at the hitch.

Are the electrics on an old Defender good enough for a screen and a dash cam?

Usually, once we check them. We run a fused feed for the head unit and the dash cam from the fuse box rather than tapping old wiring, add an earth where needed and use a low-voltage cut-off so a truck that sits for a week does not go flat. If the vehicle is 24 V we fit a converter first.

Which Land Rover Defender generation do I have?

L316 Tdi / Td5 — 1990–2006 (90, 110 and 130): Single-DIN radio in the dash pod or centre console, no screen; many trucks had no radio at all when new. L316 Puma — 2007–2016 (90, 110 and 130): Single-DIN Land Rover CD radio in the new centre dash, no screen. L663 — 2020 on (90, 110 and 130): Pivi Pro 10-inch, 11.4-inch on later cars; CarPlay and Android Auto standard, wireless on most cars after software updates. Not sure? Send the reg on WhatsApp and we tell you the generation and the route.

What does Radio King fit on a Land Rover Defender?

Car radio: DAB radio or Android screen in the single-DIN slot on classic and Puma Defenders; the L663 keeps Pivi Pro. Speakers: Weather-tolerant speakers and wiring for classic and Puma Defenders; Meridian kept on the L663. CarPlay: Android screen in the single-DIN slot on classic and Puma Defenders, wireless adapter on the L663. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off on every Defender; 12 V side on the P400e. Reversing camera: Rear-door or wheel-carrier camera on a mirror monitor or Android screen; a towing camera on the L663. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

How long do jobs on a Land Rover Defender take?

Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Speakers: two to four hours depending on how many speakers are changed. CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Most Defender owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

Do you keep the factory system on a Land Rover Defender?

L316 Tdi / Td5: the Single-DIN radio in the dash pod or centre console, no screen; many trucks had no radio at all when new stays and we add to it. L316 Puma: the Single-DIN Land Rover CD radio in the new centre dash, no screen stays and we add to it. L663: the Pivi Pro 10-inch, 11.4-inch on later cars; CarPlay and Android Auto standard, wireless on most cars after software updates stays and we add to it. Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
