Land Rover Discovery upgrades, generation by generation.

The Discovery 4 (2009–2016), almost always for the wireless CarPlay box on the 7-inch screen; it is our most common Land Rover job and the one in the case studies. Discovery 3s come for Android screens, and Discovery 5s for a software unlock or a box. The Discovery Sport is a different car and has its own page.

Yes. On the Discovery 4 the CarPlay box uses the car's own audio input, so the amplifier and speakers are untouched. On the Discovery 3 the Android screen connects to the Harman Kardon amplifier through a fibre-optic adapter where the car has one, so every speaker keeps working and nothing is cut.

About half a day. The dash centre comes out to reach the back of the screen, the box goes in on plug-in harnesses, and we test CarPlay, Android Auto and the camera before it all goes back together. You can wait in the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it after lunch.

CarPlay: Android screen on the D3, wireless box on the D4, unlock or box on the D5, wireless adapter on Pivi Pro cars. Reversing camera: Factory-look camera on the factory screen with guidelines, coded in where the car supports it. Car radio: Larger Android screen with the factory buttons and amplifier kept, where the original display is too small. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and dash, extended factory ambient on newer cars, app controlled. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Colour-matched sensors with a factory-style tone, shown on the screen where the car supports it. Dash cam: Hardwired from the fuse box with parking mode and a low-voltage cut-off, cables hidden. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Most Discovery owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
