Honda Civic upgrades, generation by generation.

FN and FK cars from 2006 to 2011 for Android screens, because the factory radio has no screen to add anything to, and a steady run of Japanese-import FK7 and FK8 cars with Gathers units for the same reason. Tenth-generation owners mostly want dash cams, front sensors and wireless CarPlay, FL owners dash cams and ambient lighting.

At the dashboard no: the FN2, FK2, FK8 and FL5 share the head unit and fascia of the standard car of the same generation, so the same Android screen or adapter fits. The FK8 and FL5 have a factory amplifier that we keep. Rear sensors on the Type R bumpers need a closer look because of the diffuser.

The FL e:HEV keeps a normal 12 V battery for the electronics, so the dash cam is hardwired from the interior fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off like any other car; the high-voltage system is never touched. The same applies to the older FD Hybrid saloon that comes in as a Japanese import.

FN / FK — 2006–2011 (Five-door and three-door hatch, FN2 Type R; FD saloon and Hybrid as imports): CD radio with the digital display strip under the windscreen; Honda DVD navigation on the EX; Japanese imports carry a Gathers unit. FK2 / FB — 2012–2016 (Five-door hatch and Tourer estate, FK2 Type R): CD radio with the i-MID 5-inch display on early cars; Honda Connect 7-inch touchscreen from the 2015 facelift, without CarPlay. FK / FC — 2017–2021 (FK7 five-door hatch, FC1 saloon, FK8 Type R): Honda Connect 7-inch touchscreen with CarPlay and Android Auto on SR and EX; a 5-inch display audio without CarPlay on the entry S; Japanese-import FK8 cars carry a Gathers unit. FL — 2022 on (Five-door hatch e:HEV hybrid, FL5 Type R): Honda Connect 9-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay and wired Android Auto from the factory. Not sure? CarPlay: Android screen on FN, FK and FK2 cars, factory CarPlay with a wireless adapter on the FK, FC and FL. Reversing camera: Camera on the Android screen on older cars, factory-look camera on Honda Connect, factory camera from 2017. Car radio: Android screen with a matching fascia on FN, FK and FK2 cars; entry and import tenth-generation cars. Parking sensors: Colour-matched rear and front sensors, faulty factory front sensors diagnosed on the tenth generation. Dash cam: Hardwired from the driver's side fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off; 12 V side only on the e:HEV. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters on every generation; premium audio and Bose cars keep the amplifier. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits in doors and footwells, extended factory ambient lighting on the FL. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Car radio: two to three hours, usually the same day. Parking sensors: two to three hours for one end, about half a day for front and rear. Most Civic owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.
