BMW 2 Series upgrades, generation by generation.

The F45 Active Tourer and F46 Gran Tourer, nearly always for CarPlay activation or a box, and the F22 coupé for a bigger screen. F44 and G42 owners come for dash cams and extended ambient light.

F22 / F23 — 2014–2021 (F22 coupé, F23 convertible): Business 6.5-inch or Professional 8.8-inch screen: NBT to 2016, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017. F45 / F46 — 2014–2021 (F45 Active Tourer, F46 Gran Tourer): 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen: NBT to 2016, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017, iDrive 7 on late cars. F44 / G42 — 2020 on (F44 Gran Coupé, G42 coupé): iDrive 7 (ID7), iDrive 8 on later cars; CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory. Not sure? CarPlay: Coding activation on NBT Evo cars, a CarPlay box on 2014–2016 NBT cars, factory CarPlay on the F44 and G42. Ambient lighting: Ambient LED kits on the F22 and F45, extended ambient lighting on the F44 and G42. Dash cam: Hardwired from the glovebox fuse panel with parking mode and a BMW-safe cut-off. Reversing camera: Factory camera coded into iDrive on every 2 Series body. Car radio: A 10.25-inch Android screen with the iDrive knob kept on the F22 and F45. Speakers: Plug-in door speakers and tweeters, factory head unit and amplifier kept, no cutting. Parking sensors: Four rear sensors and a beeper that speeds up as you close in; nothing on the screen. Subwoofer: Under-seat or boot subwoofer on a DSP amplifier fed from the factory unit, boot space kept. Soundproofing: Doors and floor treated with butyl and foam, trim refitted without marks.

CarPlay: under an hour for activation, two to four hours for a box or a screen. Ambient lighting: two to four hours. Dash cam: one to two hours for a front camera, about two with a rear camera. Reversing camera: two to three hours. Most 2 Series owners wait at the workshop or drop the car in the morning and collect it the same day.

F22 / F23: the Business 6.5-inch or Professional 8.8-inch screen: NBT to 2016, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017 stays and we add to it. F45 / F46: the 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen: NBT to 2016, NBT Evo (ID5/ID6) from 2017, iDrive 7 on late cars stays and we add to it. F44 / G42: the iDrive 7 (ID7), iDrive 8 on later cars; CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory stays and we add to it. Steering-wheel buttons, factory amplifiers and cameras are carried over on every route; the only route that changes what you see is an Android screen, and even then the controls are kept.
