Halfords Dash Cam Fitting in Ireland: What It Costs, What Is Included and When a Specialist Makes More Sense

“How much do Halfords charge to fit a dash cam?” is one of the most common questions Irish drivers type into Google before they buy a camera. Halfords is the biggest name in car accessories in the country, it has stores in most large towns, and its fitting service is the first one most people hear of. This article sets out what the Halfords Ireland service costs and includes, using the figures published on halfords.ie, and then explains when a specialist car electronics workshop is the better choice.

What Halfords Ireland charges

On 17 September 2026 the Halfords Ireland dash cam fitting service was listed at:

• €90 for a front dash cam
• €120 for a front and rear dash cam

These are the prices published on halfords.ie on that date and they may have changed since. Both prices are for fitting only. The camera is bought separately, and Halfords sells Nextbase, its own HDC range and a few other brands. A Nextbase 522GW front and rear bundle plus the €120 fitting is a typical basket.

What the Halfords fitting includes

According to the service page, the technician hard-wires the camera to the car’s ignition circuit, hides the power cable behind the dashboard and leaves the 12V socket free. Fitting is booked into a one-hour slot, and Halfords notes that it usually takes less time than that. Fitting is only available on selected vehicles, and the page asks you to contact your local store to check yours.

Three things the page does not mention, which matter if you want the camera to do more than record while driving:

• Parking mode. Recording while the car is off needs a constant-live feed as well as the ignition feed. A camera wired to the ignition alone stops when you switch off.
• Low-voltage cut-off. A hardwire kit with a voltage monitor protects the battery during parking mode. The page does not say whether one is fitted or included in the price.
• Rear camera routing. A rear camera on the tailgate or rear screen means a cable through the headlining and, on hatchbacks and SUVs, through the rubber grommet between body and tailgate. That is the slow part of any install and is the reason a one-hour slot is tight for front and rear on some cars.

None of this makes the Halfords service bad. For a plug-and-record front camera on a common car, it is quick, national and cheap. It does mean you should ask exactly what you are getting before you pay for the front and rear option.

What Halfords Ireland does not list

The Halfords Ireland fitting services page covers batteries, bulbs, wiper blades, tyres, car stereos, dash cams, child seats, bike racks and roof boxes. Car audio fitting for stereos was listed from €90 on the same date.

Not listed for Ireland: Apple CarPlay or Android Auto installation, CarPlay interfaces behind factory screens, reversing camera fitting, parking sensor fitting and speaker or subwoofer installation. If you have arrived here searching for “halfords reverse camera” or “will Halfords fit CarPlay”, the answer from their own site is that these are not offered as fitting services in Ireland, and those jobs go to a specialist. The Audi A3 reversing camera and parking sensors job above is typical: the camera sits in an existing aperture so nothing is cut, the feed goes through the tailgate loom and the picture appears on the factory screen the moment reverse is selected. On the 2013 Audi A6 Estate the reversing camera went in alongside a CarPlay interface in the same visit.

Why the reversing camera matters more than the fitting price

A dash cam records the collision. A reversing camera is the one camera that stops it happening, and it is the install most people searching for “halfords reverse camera” actually need. Three reasons it earns its place ahead of the fitting-price comparison.

Safety for the people around the car. The blind zone behind a car starts at the bumper and, on an SUV, a van or a pickup, runs back several car lengths at the height of a child. The camera sits low on the tailgate and shows that zone in one bright, wide picture with guidelines that follow the steering. The United States has required a rearview camera on every new car since 2018 precisely because young children are so often the victims of backover crashes, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash data shows cars with a camera are involved in noticeably fewer reversing collisions than cars without. For your passengers it means reversing at a walking pace with eyes forward and on the screen instead of twisted round in the seat. For children, pets, cyclists and the neighbour’s car it means the bumper stops where the guidelines say it will.

Irish weather. Half of the year the drive home is in the dark and the rear window is streaked with rain. Met Éireann’s rainfall records make December the wettest month, with October, November and January each around 130 to 140 mm, and December gets about an hour of sunshine a day. Check the Dublin forecast for the week or the annual weather statements for the last twelve months and you get the same answer: a wet rear window and a head-check over the shoulder is not a rear view. A reversing camera is lit by the reversing lights, rain runs off the lens, and the picture on the screen is clear when the glass is not. The bright days are no easier: Irish sun sits low from autumn to spring, it whites out the rear window and fills the mirrors with glare, and on wet tarmac it does both at once. The camera lens sits in the shade of the bumper and its HDR sensor balances the sky against the ground, so the kerb and whatever is on it look the same on the screen whether the sun is in your eyes or the rain is on the glass.

Insurance and resale. No Irish insurer we know of discounts for a reversing camera or a dash cam. What they do is keep the premium from rising. An at-fault reversing bump costs the excess, the no-claims bonus and a loaded premium for several renewals; a camera fitted for about the price of one excess makes that claim not happen, and dash cam footage moves a disputed collision onto the other driver’s policy instead of a split-liability settlement against yours. When the car is sold, a reversing camera on the factory screen and a hidden, hardwired dash cam are among the first things buyers ask about, especially on family cars, SUVs and vans, and they give you a reason to hold your asking price.

Big vehicles most of all. A panel van has no rear window. A pickup has a high tailgate and a load bed. A camper carries a bathroom where the glass would be. A seven-seater has three rows of headrests. On all of these the camera is not a comfort feature, it is the rear view, and it is the vehicle class where a fitting chain’s one-hour slot on selected cars is least likely to cover you.

When the Halfords route is right

• You want a single front camera and you are happy with a plug-in style unit.
• Your car is a common model with a plastic dash and no trim surprises.
• There is a store near you and you would rather not drive into Dublin 11.
• You do not need parking mode.

When a specialist makes more sense

Parking mode and battery protection. We wire every camera through a hardwire kit with low-voltage cut-off, set the cut-off for the car and test parking mode before handover. That is the difference between a camera that records the door dent in the Dunnes car park and one that was asleep.

Front and rear on a hatchback, SUV or estate. The rear cable goes through the tailgate grommet and is clipped along the factory loom, not tucked under a mat. It takes longer than an hour and it is the part most likely to be rushed on a fixed slot.

Taxis and fleets. Three-channel systems with an infrared cabin camera, a 128 GB card and a permanent power feed are a different job from a front camera, and they need to be set up so the interior recording complies with data protection rules. Mirror dash cams. A mirror unit replaces or clips over the factory mirror and takes a reversing camera feed from the rear. It needs a reverse-light trigger and a cable run the full length of the car. The mirror dash cam with reverse in our shop is the one we fit from €350.

Reversing cameras and parking sensors. Not listed by Halfords in Ireland. We fit them to cars, vans, pickups and campers, on the factory screen where the car allows it and on a new head unit or mirror monitor where it does not.

Electric and hybrid cars. The 12V battery in an EV is small and the fuse layout is unusual. Parking mode has to be set conservatively, and some cars need the feed taken from a specific circuit to avoid warnings on the dash.

Premium cars. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo and Land Rover pillars carry curtain airbags and clips that break if the trim is pulled without the right tool. We fit CarPlay interfaces behind the factory screens of these cars regularly, and the same care goes into a dash cam.

Add a mid-range camera to the Halfords fitting price and the two columns end up close for a front camera. The gap is in what the fitting includes, not in what it costs.

Questions people ask before booking

How long does it take? A front camera is about an hour anywhere. Front and rear is an hour and a half to two hours done properly. Three-channel taxi installs are a half day. A reversing camera on its own is usually two to three hours, depending on the car and the screen.

Does hardwiring void my car warranty? No. A fuse tap sits in an existing fuse slot and nothing in the factory loom is cut. The install is reversible.

Can the camera be moved to my next car? Yes. The hardwire kit and the camera come out cleanly and we refit them for a fitting fee.

Will it fail the NCT? Not if it sits behind the mirror outside the driver’s swept view. We position every camera with that in mind.
