So do I need an amplifier? Technically a
subwoofer always needs one — the only question is whether it is inside the box or beside it. A
head unit cannot drive a subwoofer: real power on a factory or standard aftermarket radio is
around fifteen to twenty watts a channel, fine for door speakers and nowhere near enough to move
a subwoofer cone. Buy a passive sub and an external amplifier is not optional. Buy an active one
and you already bought the amplifier.

Will a subwoofer drain my car battery?
Not a correctly installed one. The amplifier is switched by a remote turn-on and powers down with the ignition, so it draws nothing while the car is parked. Battery problems come from incorrect wiring, not from the subwoofer itself.
